Bone Grafting and Guided Bone Regeneration

Bone Grafting:

When an area of your body is missing bone, this deficient area frequently called a “bony defect”. Examples of jawbone defects are:

  • Defects that are caused by trauma
  • Defects that occur following tooth extractions of from long-term tooth loss
  • Defects surrounding dental implants
  • Defects from cysts of tumor surgery
  • Defects caused from poor dental hygiene and long-term periodontal disease

A bone graft is a surgical procedure that replaces missing bone with material from the patients own body (autogenous) or with an artificial, synthetic or natural substitute.  The graft not only replaces the bone, but can actually help your body to re-grow bone that has been lost. The new bone that grows actually strengthens the area that was grafted, with a new bone substance by forming a “bridge” between and within your existing bone and the graft material.

Guided Bone Regeneration

Guided Bone Regeneration or GBR is a procedure in which a special membrane is placed over the area where a bone defect has occurred.  This special membrane is made of a material that encourages the growth of new bone in the area, and at the same time, prevents the growth of non-bony scar tissue in the area of the defect.

Platelet Rich Plasma: Used to Accelerate and
Enhance Bone Growth

What is PRP?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a non-toxic, non-immune substance that accelerates healing. It can be used in patients to improve their chance for successful osseointegration of dental implants. PRP is produced from a patient's own blood in a process called Platelet Enrichment Activation. PRP contains densely concentrated growth factors that accelerate and enhance bone growth around titanium dental implants, as well as other areas requiring additional bone.

Platelet Enrichment Activation:

Is a three step process in which
platelets are:

1. Separated from the other blood components
2. Biomechanically concentrated
3. Activated in order to create (PRP) Autologous Platelet Rich     Plasma.

What are the advantages of PRP treatment?

Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment helps with bone grafting of bony defect areas with:

  • Improved healing
  • Speeds bone growth
  • Non-toxic
  • Safe and sterile
