What Differentiates Our Practice?

Group Practice

Dr. Stanley Small and Dr. Herbert Shapiro began the practice in 1966 and were later joined by Dr. Jeffrey Stein and Dr. Michael Caruso. Dr. Small retired in 2005, Dr. Shapiro, in 2010. Dr. Rachel Levarek joined our practice in 2016. Our multigenerational practice has spanned over 80 years of combined clinical experience. We draw upon that experience as we meet regularly to discuss atypical and challenging cases. Second and even third opinions when indicated are available in house as a courtesy. Between all of the doctors, vast arrays of scientific journals are reviewed and conferences attended. This material is shared and readily integrated into our practice bringing you the latest advancements in technology, materials and procedures.

Training, Knowledge and Expertise

Our doctors have extensive training at elite institutions and have been recognized for their prolific attendance of educational seminars. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery encompasses a broad spectrum and we have elected to concentrate and be experts in extractions, whether routine or complex (i.e. wisdom teeth) or orthodontic in nature, as well as oral pathology. Dr. Stein, Dr. Caruso and Dr. Levarek are regarded by many as super-specialists in dental implants and bone regeneration procedures associated with implants. The doctors have taught in dental schools and hospitals. Lectures and/or publications by the doctors of Westchester Implant and Oral Surgery group cover subjects including dental implants, bone grafts, sinus lifts, dentoalveoar surgery (extractions, pre-prosthetic and orthodontic surgery), pharmacology, anesthesia, facial pain, surgical complications and management of the medically compromised patient.

Implants

Westchester Implant and Oral Surgery Group was one of the first practices in the United States to bring from Sweden the innovative technique of replacing missing teeth with implants. Westchester County residents were among the earliest beneficiaries of this revolutionary change in dentistry. We have built upon that foundation as we continue to treat not only patients from Westchester, but from the tri-state region including those who come from New York City. We are regularly referred patients from other dentists and surgical specialists complex cases in which they have encountered difficulties. Being one of the largest providers of implants in the region we are able to maintain a broad inventory of implants and associated components. Despite the best pre-surgical planning, intra-operative changes in the plan are not infrequent. This inventory ensures you get the implant that is right for the situation and not just what was pre-ordered or in stock. Since 1987 we have had an implant study group with over 100 dentists and lab technicians, focusing on implant training and education. This facilitates coordinated quality care by all members of the implant team. Drs. Stein, Caruso and Levarek have lectured and published on dental implants, bone grafting and sinus lift grafting.

Professionalism and Quality of Care

While working with your doctor, you will be treated with dignity and respect. Our objective is to provide you with the best level of care ensuring an optimal outcome with the least amount of surgery necessary. We are committed to informing and including you in the process. Westchester Implant and Oral Surgery Group prides itself with delivering quality care with honesty and integrity. We have built decades of long-standing relationships with our patients and referring dentists as testament to our approach.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery currently requires a minimum of four additional years of training after dental school. Anesthesia training is a major component of this training and is a routine part of the practice when desired. As Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Drs. Stein, Caruso and Levarek manage a wide array of problems relating to the mouth, teeth and face. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are uniquely qualified amongst dentists and other dental specialists to handle complex surgical cases, anesthesia issues, the severely infirmed patient as well as manage complications.

Technology

With each passing year one thing you can count on are changes in technology. Westchester Implant and Oral Surgery Group regularly updates its treatment protocols utilizing new proven technological advancements. We routinely embrace the state of the art technologies such as: Cone Beam CT scans (CBCT), CAD/CAM implant componentry, radio frequency implant stability meter (Osstell), platelet rich plasma (PRP), piezo (ultrasonic) surgery and computer guided surgery to raise and achieve the goals of care.

Communication with your Dentist

We routinely communicate with your dentist before, during and after treatment. This may take the form of letters, emails, or phone conferences. More complex cases frequently require us meeting with your dentist to review study models, x-rays, photographs etc. Regardless of the method of communication we want to ensure that you, your dentist, the dental lab technician, and your surgeon are all on the same page. We will coordinate treatment with all parties. Your dentist will receive in depth reports and x-ray copies throughout the process.
